Hundreds of people
who came to the Mercer Union exhibition signed petitions supporting
legislation to abolish the death penalty in the State of Texas.
The petitions, along with a cover letter requesting Canadian death
row inmate Stanley Faulder be sent back to Canada where he would
serve an alternative sentence, was sent to George W. Bush. The Special
Rapporteur sent repeated appeals to the Government of the United
States pointing out that Mr. Faulder had reportedly not been informed
of his rights under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
Mr. Joseph Stanley Faulder was executed in the State of Texas on
June 17, 1999 against the wishes of Amnesty International, the Canadian
Government and the international community. George W. Bush's disregard
for human rights, international law and human life continues today
with thousands of killings of innocent people in Iraq by his administration.
