The Container is a community social space and mervin's goal is to start an international residency program where visiting artists, activists and media practitioners can participate in a cultural exchange with participants. We started week two refreshed and invigorated after a Saturday of fun at Dunns River Falls. On Sunday we went to Kingston to participate in an event at Jamaica School of Drama then we had lunch at the seaside in Port Royal.
Many of the participants are on their way to finishing their projects. The Digital Storytelling program could take as little as 3 days to complete but here the challenge is to teach not only computer skills but leadership skills so when we leave, people who created stories will be able to carry on and teach others. We started off by talking about leadership and what it means in the context of the Container. We asked them to start by creating a skit to portray what the container is like now and what they imagine it would be like 3 years from now. In scenario 2, the Container had grown to include a net cafe and several other enterprises.
At this point everyone is working on their own with support from Jennifer and I. The Container concept is based on a knowledge sharing model. We teach participants how to give feedback and encourage them to help each other by sharing new skills as they are learned.
