Year Zero One is pleased to present TRANSMEDIA :29:59,
a year long exhibition on the pedestrian level video
billboard at Yonge-Dundas Square in downtown Toronto.
Launched August 1st 2005, TRANSMEDIA :29:59 features
one minute video works 24/7 every half hour on the 29th
and 59th minutes.
Featured for the month of February is Shaan Syed's 'Girl
Smoking' and Ed Pien's 'Rain Boy'.
Shaan Syed's Girl
Smoking is a hand-drawn classic animation showing
a woman engaged in the repetitive act of smoking a cigarette.
Ed
Pien’s Rain
Boy animation reveals a post-apocalyptic scene where
precipitation mixed with teardrops and sweat, falls
incessantly on and around the head of a young boy. Undaunted,
the boy surveys his surrounding with a sense of determination
and courage. Rain Boy is created using Maya animation
software. This work is realized with the assistance
from the Banff Centre for the Arts.
BIOS
Ed
Pien has exhibited nationally and internationally
including the Drawing Centre, New York; La Biennale
de Montreal; W139, Amsterdam; Contemporary Art Gallery,
Vancouver; Middlesbrough Art Gallery, the UK; Centro
Nacional de las Artes, Mexico City; The Contemporary
Art Museum in Monterrey, Mexico; and The Goethe Institute,
Berlin. Pien has also been awarded a Canada Council
for the Arts six-month residency in London, the UK starting
next March. Currently he is participating in a two-month
residency in Shanghai.
Shaan
Syed recently relocated from Toronto to London UK
where he is completing his Masters in Fine Art at Goldsmiths
College. He has shown his work across Canada, Europe
and in the US. In 2004 Shaan was regionally shortlisted
for Canada's leading contemporary art prize, The Sobey
Art Award. In summer 2006, Plug In Institute for Contemporary
Art (Winnipeg) will host a solo exhibition of Shaan's
paintings, curated by Steven Maticjio. Shaan Syed is
represented by Birch Libralato (Toronto) and Galerie
Brigitte Weiss (Zurich).
